Legendary women’s tennis head coach, Tom Morris, earned two more wins on his way to retirement on Saturday. East Carolina University Women’s tennis (5-6) hosted a double header against George Washington University (3-6) and North Carolina Central University (1-5) on what would be Morris’ last match before deciding to retire, effective on Sunday.

Coach Morris is a member of the North Carolina Tennis Hall of Fame and is ECU’s all-time winningest women’s tennis coach. The 2019-20 season would have made 22 years as ECU women’s tennis head coach.

Over 22 seasons, coach Morris racked up an overall record of 324-206, but if you include the seven seasons he served as head coach of both the men’s and women’s teams at ECU, Morris tallies a total record of 392-276 while at ECU.

The Pirates won both matches on Saturday to give Morris an appropriate send off. A 4-1 victory over George Washington and an impressive 7-0 win over the NC Central Eagles, Coach Morris leaves the program in capable hands as associate head coach Kirstin Burgess will take over.

Burgess has been at East Carolina as an assistant coach or associate head coach for eight years now. She takes over as head coach effective Sunday, but has already been working to fill the big shoes Morris is leaving behind.

Saturday’s contest against NC Central saw all six Pirates win in two sets, but ECU sophomore, Minette Van Vreden did show some signs of frustration after a tough first set against NCCU sophomore Hannah Gaines. Noticing this, coach Burgess took the time to settle Van Vreden down. Van Vreden went on to finish Gaines in two sets 6-3, 6-4.

“I told her just to relax, enjoy the process and work on getting better with every shot and from their getting better with every point,” Burgess said.
